Volunteers Brave the Elements for Kalamazoo River Cleanup

July 17, 2025

On May 17th, despite steady rain and widespread power outages across the region, over 400 dedicated volunteers showed up to support the 2nd Annual Kalamazoo River Cleanup. Among them were First National Bank of Michigan team members Jamie Sorn, Andrea Vaughn, and Kim Sharp, who arrived prepared and eager to contribute—rain gear and all.

The cleanup effort covered more than 10 miles of the Kalamazoo River and the trails surrounding it, stretching through Kalamazoo, Comstock, and Parchment. Volunteers removed an astounding two tons of trash from the riverbanks, trails, and waterways. Participants used kayaks, waded through creeks, and walked the shoreline, working together to make a visible difference in the local environment.

The Kalamazoo River Cleanup Initiative is a community-driven effort focused on restoring the river’s natural habitat, improving water quality, and enhancing the beauty and usability of one of the area’s most vital natural assets. It’s also about changing perspectives.

“People have grown up here with a sense that the river is to be avoided at all costs,” said Doug McLaughlin, Executive Director of the Kalamazoo Watershed Council. “Now, people are turning toward the river to make the most of the natural asset.”

Thanks to years of effort and millions of dollars invested in removing historic pollution, the Kalamazoo River is becoming a place for recreation, conservation, and community pride. Events like the annual cleanup show the power of collective action and the commitment of local residents—and businesses—to building a sustainable future.

At First National Bank of Michigan, we’re proud to support this initiative and help protect and preserve the places we call home. Volunteers like Jamie, Andrea, and Kim exemplify the values we strive to live by every day: community, care, and a commitment to making a positive impact.
